Evidence beats opinion.

Turn promising technical ideas into products and services customers will buy.

We help technical and manufacturing businesses investigate customer needs, test commercial assumptions and decide what to develop next.

That might mean exploring one new product or market. It might mean helping several teams in a larger organisation build stronger evidence for their ideas.

You have something worth exploring

Perhaps you have a promising idea that has not moved forward. A technical team is developing something new. Customers have expressed interest, but you need to understand what would turn that interest into a purchase.

Or several opportunities are competing for engineering time, and each has a persuasive case behind it.

We work with you to investigate the questions that matter: who has the problem, how they deal with it today, what would make them change, and whether there is a business worth building around the answer.

Experience inside a global industrial company

Over five years, Denis Oakley & Co worked inside the innovation system of a global industrial company.

Across successive cohorts, the programme screened more than 700 technical ideas, supported more than 500 teams, and generated more than 3,000 documented or reported customer interviews.

The purpose was not better presentations. It was better evidence for decisions about what to develop, change or stop.

Give good ideas a fair test

Technical expertise matters. So does understanding the customer.

An enthusiastic response is not the same as a buying decision. A working prototype does not, by itself, establish demand. And changing an idea after learning from customers is not necessarily a setback.

Our approach is to make the important assumptions explicit, investigate them with customers, and use what we learn to shape the next step.

Sometimes that means backing the original idea with greater confidence. Sometimes it means changing the customer, the offer or the business model. Sometimes it means stopping before the commitment grows.

Start with a focused piece of work

You do not have to begin with a large programme.

For an established smaller business, we can start with a paid investigation into one product, service or market opportunity.

For a larger organisation, we can start with a customer-discovery pilot involving a small group of teams.

We agree what the work needs to establish, which decision it should inform and where the initial engagement ends. You can then judge the value of working with us before considering a larger commitment.

Work with Denis Oakley & Co

I’m Denis Oakley. I lead the consultancy.

Our starting point is to understand what you are trying to do, how the business works and what you already know. The work follows the problem—not a programme we have decided to sell you in advance.

Let’s talk about what you are working on

Bring an idea, a project or a wider question about how your business develops new products and services. You do not need a finished brief.

In 30 minutes, we will explore the opportunity, what you have learned from customers and what needs to happen next. The aim is to identify whether there are important questions worth investigating together.

It is an initial conversation, not a commitment to a programme.
